General Firearm Questions:

➤ Do you sell firearms at the range?

The Long Island Shooting Range at Brookhaven does not sell any firearms at the range>. However, we have a fully stocked ProShop where you can purchase targets, ear protection, eye protection and other accessories, as well as ammunition (with a background check).

➤ Can I order firearms and/or ammunition and have it shipped to you as an FFL?

No. The Long Island Shooting Range at Brookhaven is not a FFL (Federal Firearms Licensed) dealer and does not provide FFL transfers of ammo or firearms.

➤ What caliber firearms am I allowed to bring to the range?

The Long Island Shooting Range at Brookhaven allows customers to bring legally obtained firearms to the range — from .22 LR up to .50 caliber.

➤ Do I need a license to shoot a firearm?

In New York state you will need to possess a NYS Pistol License to handle any pistol/handgun. Licenses are not required to shoot shotguns or rifles.

➤ What is the age requirement to participate at the different ranges?

For Rifle shooters: No one under 12 can shoot at the rifle range. Children between the ages of 12 years-old to 15 years old can only shoot a .17 or .22 caliber rifle.
For Shotgun shooters: No one under the age of 14 years-old can shoot at the shotgun ranges. Children between the ages of 14 years-old to 15 years old can shoot at the shotgun ranges, but the gun must fit them. Shotgun shooters 16 years-old and above can shoot any caliber.

➤ Can I rent a firearm?

The only rentals we offer are shotguns for our clay courses. We do not have rentals for rifle or pistol shooters.

➤ Can I shoot my shotgun on the rifle range?

Yes you can shoot your shotgun on the rifle range, but you are required to shoot slugs. This ensures you don’t hit anyone else’s targets.

➤ If I have a pistol license, but my friend or family member does not have a NYS Pistol License, can they shoot my pistols/handguns?

NO. In order to shoot a pistol or handgun at The Long Island Shooting Range at Brookhaven, you must possess a valid NYS Pistol License in your name.

➤ Do customers have to remain seated while shooting rifles?

We offer three different experiences for rifle shooters who visit The Long Island Shooting Range at Brookhaven. We offer 10 bench rest shooting with stools, 2) prone shooting and 3) standing. When you arrive at the range, inform the Range Officer which type of shooting you’d like to do and they will set you up at the appropriate station. For prone rifle shooting, we offer platforms with mats for your comfort.

➤ How do I transport a firearm to your range?

We ask that all firearms be unloaded and carried in a case when you come to the range.

General Ammunition Questions:

➤ Can I bring my own ammunition?

Yes, it is encouraged to bring your own ammunition. However, you can purchase ammunition at our range. You will need to undergo a background check before purchasing ammo. The Long Island Shooting Range at Brookhaven supplies many different calibers of ammunition for purchase. Feel free to call us to confirm your caliber is in stock.

➤ Is Steel ammo allowed on the clay range?

No. Steel or Buckshot cannot be used on the clay side of the range. You must use lead shot and it has to be #7.5, #8, or #9.

➤ Do I need to go through a background check for ammunition?

Yes, in the state of New York it is required to go through a background check in order to purchase ammunition now. The background check takes about 8 minutes to complete. You simply fill out the information required. Most checks go through right away.

➤ Is there a limit on how much ammunition I can buy at your range?

There is no limit on any ammunition purchase at the range. As long as you complete the NYS background check you can buy as much ammo as you would desire.

General Shooting Range Questions:

➤ Do you supply hearing and eye protection?

We do not supply hearing and eye protection for free, but both are available for purchase in our ProShop.

➤ Do I have to make reservations before coming to the range?

The Long Island Shooting Range at Brookhaven is a public shooting range — our policy is first come, first served.

➤ Can you accommodate large parties and corporate events?

Yes! We can absolutely make arrangements for large groups and corporate events. Please contact our main office to make arrangements. The earlier you contact us about your event, the better.

➤ How do I change my targets at the rifle and pistol range?

The Range Safety Officers call cease fires every 20-30 minutes, so customers can walk down range and safely change their targets.

➤ If I have never shot before, do I need to take a class before renting a shotgun for the clay ranges?

Yes. If you are a new shooter, we require you to take our Intro To Clay Shooting Class. This will provide a basic understanding of gun safety and how the clay shooting games work. Once that is completed, you are free to visit us anytime and rent a firearm for clay shooting.

➤ Do you clean guns after I am done shooting?

We do not provide gun cleaning services, but we sell all the necessary items for you to do that on your own.

➤ Do you have a gunsmith on staff?

We do not provide gunsmith services at the range.

➤ What are the range’s hours of operation?

Monday: 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM / Tuesday: Closed / Wednesday: 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM / Thursday: 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM / Friday: 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM / Saturday: 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM / Sunday: 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM.
The range’s hours of operation can change due to bad weather or holidays. If it’s snowing / raining, or if you want to confirm the range is open, please give us a call to make sure the range is available before visiting, In addition, you can visit our Event Calendar to learn about current and upcoming closures.

➤ What is available to shoot on the clay side?

The clay side of our range features: Trap, Skeet, FITASC, Five Stand, and Sporting Clays.

➤ How many stations are available for Sporting Clays?

We have six stations in the woods with three machines on each station. We also have six fields designed for Sporting Clays with around six to eight machines on each field.

➤ Are there separate charges to shoot rifles and pistols?

No. As long as you posses a NYS Pistol license, you can shoot both for the same price.

➤ Do you supply Archery equipment for customers interested in shooting bows?

We do not supply archery equipment. Customers must bring their own bows and arrows. Arrows must have practice tips,

➤ Can you shoot crossbows at the Archery Range?

No. Absolutely no crossbows are allowed.

➤ Do you sell food and drinks?

We have a newly refurbished Shooters Lounge with complimentary coffee, as well as vending machines for snacks and soft drinks. In addition, most weekends there are an assortment of food trucks on site for your convenience. If you would like to bring your own food and beverages, please feel free to use our lounge or outdoor pavilion.

➤ Do you have restrooms at the facility?

We have restrooms available in the main office and near the clay range.

➤ Do you have golf carts available for the sporting clay course?

Yes. We have a a brand new fleet of electric golf carts available for rent at the main office. If you have your own golf cart or push cart, you can use those as well.

➤ How do I find out if you are closed due to poor weather conditions?

We post all closings on the Events section of the website, as well as our Instagram and Facebook pages. If you are ever in question about inclement weather, please call before you decide to make the trip to ensure you get the most up to date information.

➤ Do you have an ATM on site?

We have an ATM (Automatic Teller Machine) in our ProShop for our customers.
