FITASC (Federation Internationale de Tir Aux Sportives de Chasse) History
FITASC (Federation Internationale de Tir Aux Sportives de Chasse) shooting was created in France in 1972 as a response to the growing popularity of trap and skeet shooting. It was designed to be a more challenging and versatile alternative to traditional clay target shooting sports.
The sport’s name comes from the French words “Federation Internationale de Tir Aux Sportives de Chasse,” which translates to “International Federation of Hunting Sport Shooting.” FITASC is similar to other clay shooting disciplines, but it uses a more complex scoring system, and the targets are thrown in a variety of directions and trajectories.
FITASC is typically shot in rounds of 25 targets, with shooters taking turns at different stands or “parcours.” Before shooting, competitors are given a menu of targets, telling them from which trap the clay birds will be launched. The targets are launched in a variety of directions, simulating the flight patterns of game birds like pheasants, rabbits, and teal.
The scoring system in FITASC is based on the number of targets hit, with a maximum score of 25 per round. However, unlike other clay shooting sports, the shooter must hit the first target before shooting at the second. If the first target is missed, the shooter must move on to the next pair of targets.
FITASC has become a popular shooting discipline worldwide and is now governed by the FITASC International Sporting Federation. The sport has also been adapted for use in the Olympic Games, with the FITASC International Sporting Federation working to promote the sport as an Olympic event.
What’s The Difference Between FITASC and Sporting Clays?
FITASC (Fédération Internationale de Tir aux Armes Sportives de Chasse) and Sporting Clays shooting are both shotgun shooting sports that involve shooting at clay targets, but they differ in several key ways.
➤ Course Layout: Sporting Clays courses typically have multiple shooting stations and a wide variety of targets that simulate different types of game birds and hunting scenarios. In contrast, FITASC courses are generally more structured and have fewer shooting stations with specific target presentations that must be shot in a particular order.
➤ Target Presentation: Sporting Clays targets can vary in speed, direction, angle, and trajectory, and may simulate game birds flushing, crossing, or quartering. In FITASC, targets are presented in a more standardized manner, with a limited number of target presentations.
➤ Scoring System: Sporting Clays scoring is typically based on a hit-or-miss system, with targets that are broken scoring points and those that are missed scoring zero points. In FITASC, targets are scored on a point system, with a maximum of three points awarded for each target based on where it is hit.
➤ Shooting Technique: In Sporting Clays, shooters are typically allowed to mount the gun and pre-mount it before calling for the target, while in FITASC, shooters must start with the gun unmounted and then bring it to the shoulder and aim before shooting the target.
➤ Equipment: Sporting Clays shooters typically use over-under or side-by-side shotguns, while FITASC shooters must use a semi-automatic or pump-action shotgun.
In summary, while both Sporting Clays and FITASC shooting involve shooting at clay targets with a shotgun, they differ in terms of course layout, target presentation, scoring system, shooting technique, and equipment requirements. Understanding these differences can help shooters choose the right sport for their skills and preferences.
